COVINA – A Temple City woman was arrested Wednesday after allegedly writing more than $10,000 worth of forged checks created with information stolen in car break-ins, officials said. Police received a call about 7p.m. from the Wal-Mart Supercenter, 1275 N. Azusa Road, reporting the suspect was attempting to make about $300 in purchases using both a check and an ID that appeared fraudulent, said Covina police Officer John Malinosky. As store security approached the woman, she tried to run away, but was captured by responding police officers, Malinosky said. In further investigations, police discovered the driver’s license she was using as ID had been stolen in an auto burglary, Malinosky said. Officers also found her receipts for other purchases, which were also made with forged checks all over Los Angeles County, said Malinosky. Area CVS, Rite Aid, and Walgreens pharmacies were among the stores where she allegedly passed forged checks, Malinosky added. Apparently, the woman would break into cars and use the information she stole from them to create fake checks on a computer, explained Malinosky. The suspect would go back to the stores later and return the items for cash, Malinosky said. Sheree Bersane, 32, was arrested on suspicion of forgery, ID theft, possession of stolen merchandise and burglary, said Malinosky. email@example.com (626) 962-8811, Ext. 2105 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
