LWSC, NTA to Receive Huge CRS Funds

first_imgThe Liberia Water and Sewer Corporation (LWSC) and the National Transit Authority, through a recommendation, have been singled out to be recipients of a large portion of government’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds. The Liberian government is now strategizing how to synchronize all CSR funds from various State Owned Enterprises, Commissions and Agencies to support government’s priority projects. This, according to Minister of Finance and Development Planning Amara Konneh, is in an effort to ensure that these funds meet the dire needs of the Liberian masses. This is a change from when each SOE was responsible to carry out its own CSR programs, but such programs are yet to make any impact in the lives of ordinary Liberians.Minister Konneh noted that synchronizing all of the SOEs CSR funds to prioritize specific central government initiatives in order to support performing utility entities that are impacting the lives of the people or those that need to start doing that, are necessities that are now overwhelming.According to the Finance and Development Planning boss, government’s decision to now try to synchronize the CRS funds is because the SOEs are not spending wisely their corporate social responsibility funds which have increased from over US$300 thousand from 2006 to US$13million, to trickle down to the ordinary people.Minister Konneh identified the LWSC and NTA as two of those institutions which if fully supported, will impact the lives of Liberians through the provision of service which will at the same time leave a good legacy for the President when she ends her mandate in early 2018. He said before an entity can qualify for such support, Government has to ensure its financial viability and operational effectiveness. He praised the LWSC for doing an excellent job by providing pipe-borne water supply throughout central Monrovia and other parts through its recent 90 days deliverable. He noted that a substantial amount of money from the CRS funds will be placed in a water fund to empower LWSC to be more effective in providing water for the entire citizenry. We have to invest a huge amount of funds in pipe-borne water supply through LWSC, said Minister Konneh.“There is urgency for us to provide safe drinking water to our people. It is sad to see our people in the morning with gallons on their heads going from well to well searching for water. This water thing is urgent and we must begin to act now. We must give the LWSC the necessary support to provide water to our people,” stressed.“Madam President, the LWSC is doing a tremendous job in Monrovia and there is a need for them to be supported more to continue this good work. With just a small amount of US$1M this corporation was able to do a tremendous job in Monrovia, what about when we provide them with US$13M? They will do a whole lot.”The LEC was on the extreme of LWSC, receiving a lot of criticism for doing little to provide electricity in the capital. The entity’s officials were also accused of internally stabbing the entity in the back by being involved in criminal activities which are impeding the provision of electricity in the country.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
