Wellington girls beat Collegiate, boys not as fortunate

Total 19 (1) 12-26 55.•••••The Wellington boys lost 72-51 Tuesday evening. On paper going in, it appeared Wellington had a chance for a victory. But from the onset, there was no doubt Collegiate was going to win this game.Collegiate quickly scored the game’s first 10 points and led 23-12 at the end of the first quarter and 35-23 at the half.It didn’t get any better as Collegiate kept coming in waves, bringing in five players for five others. The scary thing about the Spartans is they have three seniors and nine sophomores. Not everyone on the varsity roster scored, but everyone got a foul. Collegiate had 23 team fouls, yet no one had more than four fouls.Austin Waddell, a sophomore, led Collegiate with 16.Austin Dunn led Wellington with 15 points. Trevor Nance had 12. Wellington teams will travel to Clearwater on Friday. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — The Wellington Crusader girls were victorious over the Wichita Collegiate Spartans Tuesday night; the boys not so much.Wellington girls defeated Wichita Collegiate 55-38 to pick up their 10th win of the season. The Crusaders opened with a 9-3 first quarter lead and held a 20-8 half-time advantage.The Crusaders would expand the lead to 37-22 en route to a 55-38 win. Tayland French had a sensational game scoring a double-double. She had 18 points to lead the Dukes with 13 rebounds. She was 8 of 11 from the field and had seven offensive and six defensive rebounds. I don’t think our boys have ever beat them. Their girls are all frosh and sophomores. They will be fine in a couple of years.
