Churchill responded. An anonymous caller to The Sun, who said he was that parent, said he questioned the coach about his “strategy and treatment of players.” Jafri was not able to confirm specifics. “I’m not allowed to say,” she said when asked why Churchill was suspended. “It’s an ongoing investigation until we resolve the incident that took place.” Jafri said Churchill was suspended from coaching and not from teaching, because he was acting in his role as a coach and not as a teacher. Carter High School football coach Mike Churchill is not coaching this week, but is still teaching, said Syeda Jafri, public information officer for the Rialto Unified School District. “Mike is suspended, but it’s a personnel issue, and I can’t discuss it, because an investigation is still pending,” Jafri said on Tuesday. “He’s still teaching with us, and he’ll miss only one game. He is suspended for Friday night’s game against Arroyo Valley.” It was reported Tuesday morning that Churchill was suspended for one week from coaching, but mistakenly reported he was also suspended from teaching. It was also reported that the suspension stemmed from an argument between Churchill and a parent following Friday night’s upset loss to Pacific. She also said there is currently not a sanction against the parent. “The district may choose to ban a parent from athletic events, but we have to wait (to see) until the investigation is over.” Assistant coach Ray Kalinich is guiding the team this week. Kalinich is a Gardena Serra High School graduate who was the coach at Pacific High School from 1972-76. Last season he was an assistant at Sultana. “The ship is going to sail,” Kalinich said. “The captain’s not on it, but we’re going to try to keep it afloat and reach our goal of getting to the playoffs. “It’s going to be the same offense and defense. None of us are Mike Churchil,l and we don’t see the plays in the exact (clear) way that Mike does, but we will try to emulate him.” Carter will also be missing two players for disciplinary reasons. One of the players is wingback Brian Williams, who was ejected from the game late in the fourth quarter for arguing with an official. Ejections in prep ball result in an automatic one-game suspension, as per CIF-Southern Section rules. Kalinich said Tuesday night that another player, whom he would not identify, is being held out of the game by the Carter administration. “He got involved in a postgame thing that was unbecoming of a Carter athlete,” Kalinich said. Churchill is widely respected throughout the state. He has a 144-69-1 record during his 21 years of coaching. His 1983 and ’84 Riverside Poly teams won CIF-Southern Section titles. He is the area’s second prominent prep football coach within the space of two working days to be suspended. Bloomington football coach Don Markham on Friday was put on administrative leave indefinitely because of an altercation he had that day with a player at a pre-game walk-through. Churhill and Markham have won seven CIF titles between them. 160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong. Please try again.subscribeCongratulations!
