I drive around Dominica and I seldomly see police officers in uniform, even when they are on duty. The only time you will see them in uniform is if the magistrate is visiting. Other than that you may see them in slippers, in a short pant, in a t-shirt walking the streets” he said. The Prime Minister says proper attire is not only a security measure but an integral part of the discipline of the police service.“It is something that we have to speak about because it is an integral part, an important part of the discipline of the police service. If the sergeant is not doing it we cannot expect the corporals to do it and we cannot expect the constables to do it.And if the inspector and the ASP is not doing it and the superintendant is not doing it who else do we expect to do it?” he deliberated.Meantime Prime Minister Skerrit says government is concerned about the welfare and wellbeing of police officers. He says it is important for the Police Welfare Association and the chief of police to know every officer who is suffering from hypertension and diabetes. “It is important for the Police Welfare Association and the Chief of Police to know every single police officer who is suffering from hypertension or diabetes and I have been calling on the police and urging them to engage in a more continuous rigorous exercise regime for the police. I wonder how many of us from the time that we left Morne Bruce have gone back doing a little jogging on the streets or a little exercise. This is for your own personal wellbeing and that of the entire police service that we should pay particular attention to the prevalence of CNCD’s within our country.” he said.According the Mr Skerrit if the Police Force is appraised as to officers who are suffering with ailments they will be better able to determine ‘to what extent he can utilize a particular officer if they have a particular challenge.’Dominica Vibes Newslast_img read more
